Use Conflict to Achieve Goals!
Conflict is simply another form of usable energy. Energy is good and essential to
life. Therefore conflict is good. Right?
If this is so, we ought to be thanking people for fighting. Right? And punishing them
for being too easy to get along with. Right?
Well, pretty close. Conflict is nothing more or less than the result of intense interest
or commitment to whatever is going on. That is something you want and need. The
problem is not the energy or commitment, but the form in which it expresses itself.
And the mature leader will simply work to redirect that form to one that is more
useful.
Like what? Like helping achieve organizational goals. This is a crucial leadership
skill that takes little to learn, other than the courage to try. And a knowledge of the
key steps that need to be followed.
Once you know what those steps are, you will never again be afraid to deal with
conflict. In fact you will be so gratified by the results, that you might be tempted to
stir up a little conflict now and then. And why not, if it gets you where you want to
go? Why not? Because you may lose trust as people react to being manipulated.
Encourage what is there to come out, and allow conflict to be expressed in a
constructive way. For example, "How will your idea help achieve our goal in this
project?"
