Stimulate Better Teamwork!
A team does not exist apart from its members. The quality of personal relations is
what makes up the sense of "teamness", or "espirt de corps". (see Tip1 on
Improving your Relationships). Your cannot have a great team when the relations
among individuals are not great.
And you cannot have a great team without great leadership. This can come from the
formal leader, and it can come from any of its members. Everyone is capable of
leading - given appropriate motivation. And in the long term, everyone must lead.
We can no longer afford the waste of human resources.
The leader must set the example of how they want team members to behave. Each
member is equally responsible for setting a desirable example. This is crucial. And
for long-term success, the example must begin with mutual respect and trust.
Without these, there is no possibility of long-term effectiveness for anyone.
Respect can be demonstrated immediately. Trust takes longer to cultivate, but pays
handsome dividends in good relations and overall effectiveness.
The leader needs to cultivate a long-range vision of where the group is going, and
set clear goals and expectations for the day-to-day life of the group. And each team
member needs to be actively involved in building the vision. Otherwise, there is little
commitment to the vision, the goals, or even the team.
